This blog site is intended to help those of you with questions about how to manage a hip spica cast. The worst part of all of it is the unknown. When you are told that your child will be placed in a spica cast all kinds of questions start running through your head. How will I change their diaper? How will they sit up to eat? How will I give them a bath? How do I hold them? Can they ride in a normal car seat or stroller? Can they move at all? How will I dress them?
Hopefully this will help answer some of those questions and make the first few weeks a little easier on you. Trust me the first few weeks are the hardest, and then it just becomes a way of life. I'm not saying it is easy or enjoyable, but managing a hip spica cast is not as bad as it sounds. They will adapt and still have fun. You can hug them and kiss them and love them. None of that changes. You will just have a few more added steps each day.
